Tim and I found ourselves in a peculiar situation at the end of July. We were in Greece, but it was getting expensive, and the heat had defeated us. We wanted to go to Turkey, but wanted to avoid traveling in a Muslim country during Ramadan. So, where could we go in the meantime? A Google search for “cheap and cool places to go in August” led us to a country that held the holy trinity of backpacking criteria. Bulgaria is inexpensive, good weather, and it was only a bus ride away.
Neither of us had ever considered Bulgaria as a potential country to visit, but that’s the beauty of not having a set itinerary. We hopped on a bus and we were in the capital city of a former USSR country.
